A Orange Pie Recipe for Salvador Mourra
When you have plenty of oranges and do not want them to go to waste make an orange pie. It is not as popular as your other pies like apple or peach, but prepared properly it can be a very pleasant experience. First you will need to see what ingredients you have readily available or what kind of taste you desire. Then you pick a premade pie crust to go with that or make your own. You can choose a simple pie crust or one made of crushed cookies of your choice like an Oreo cookie crust. You will have to experiment to see what flavor you like better with your oranges.
Once you have the crust you are half way there. You then can slice up your oranges into small pieces, or you can blend them it all depends on you. I suggest you start with a simple easy recipe that requires no baking because it will save you time. You will have to first feel the oranges and then cut them up in manageable pieces. This should be the most time consuming part of making an orange pie unless you decide on a more labor intensive recipe. You place these pieces in a blender and blend for about a minute stirring to make sure all pies are blended. If the oranges are not ripe enough and too bitter to your taste you can add a little sugar or sugar substitute to your liking. Then you will place a pack of cream cheese and stir in the blender until it is thoroughly mixed. Finally you will pour this unto your pie crust and let refrigerate for at least an hour so it thickens. Then you serve!
Another variation of this is to just cut peel back the orange slices depending on the kind of orange you are dealing with. This works well for Mandarin oranges. You can place your cream cheese on the the pie crust and then place your orange slices in the pie. Then after that you place more cream cheese to cover up the Mandarin orange slices. If you run out of cream cheese then cover the remaining with whip cream and smooth over the top. Chill in the refrigerator to desired temperature and firmness and serve when ready to eat.
This variation works for when you do not have a blender readily available or do not have the time to slice the oranges. You can adjust the recipe to your taste buds, but this lends itself to one of the easiest orange pie recipes when you have minimal time and kitchen appliances. The simplest of the recipes follows.
An even simpler form of the recipe is to take a few mandarin oranges and separate the slices and place in a bowl then cover with whip cream or cool whip or whatever you want to cover with. Ice cream works very good too. If you go with ice cream then orange flavor, berry, or vanilla work well. When using ice cream you will probably want to store the resulting bowl of orange pie in the freezer but not too long. This recipe is more for immediate serving because if you leave too long the oranges can freeze up like Popsicles. If that is what you want then by all means place in the freezer.
The key here is to that you can make oranges your way with just about any ingredients you already have. So now take your bag of oranges and make some orange pie and enjoy !
